Laser Hair Removal – An Expose

Looking at ads in fashion magazines you come across many pictures of bare chested, hairless, good-looking men. This has become the new American norm. So now men join the women in the quest for smooth, shiny skin, less reminiscent of our ancestors.

Unwanted hair growth  has been a problem for women for many generations across many cultures. From the geisha of Japan that painted her eyebrows high above their natural place, to the women of Armenia who liked to look less hairy and shaved their arms.

In our modern times, the best way to achieve that smooth skin is laser hair removal. To understand why that is the case, here are the facts:

Since the modern world started using what we call a laser beam, our lives have been forever changed. Lasers are used in weaponry, industry, medicine, dentistry, cosmetic procedures, tattoo removal, and in the last few years, lasers have been used in hair removal.

It has become so popular that over 2 million procedures a year are performed in the United States alone. With so many uses and so many procedures, we understand lasers like we never did before. The treatments are quite simple. Specific treatments are designed for specific parts of the body, but what you can expect is a cooling gel being spread on the area, a few flashes of light close to the skin which will feel like little nip, zapping the hair follicle under the skin to prevent them from developing more hair. Then the gel is wiped, with all the unwanted hair.

Treatment length depends on several factors: the area treated, the color of the skin, the color of the hair and its density. Since lasers work on the melamine in the hair follicle, the darker the hair, the easier it is to target. Because the hair has to be in its growth stage to be affected, and our hairs grow at different times, repeated visits are needed to achieve smooth, hairless skin. Normal duration is somewhere between 4-6 visits.

Visit length depends on the area being treated, typically from 15 to 60 minutes.

The price varies as well. Just as botox can be found in different prices at different places, so can laser hair removal. Make sure it is a clean, reputable place. The laser is targeted to certain areas so the accuracy is very high, and the effectiveness long lasting. Research done in Ankara, Turkey, proved it is 60 times more affective than electrolysis, the other permanent hair removal method.

Side effects rarely occur, and when they do they take the form of mild redness that goes away after a couple of hours.

How Many Sessions Are Necessary for Successful Laser Hair Removal?

how-many-sessions-laser-hair-removalThe number of sessions necessary for successful laser hair removal will depend upon your type of hair and skin color. In most cases, multiple sessions are required; typically between five and seven. However, in some cases, up to a dozen sessions may be necessary to guarantee a long-term reduction of hair.

The time interval between these individual treatments has not been standardized – although most specialists will usually recommend spacing the treatments at four to six weeks apart for most areas of your body.

Once again, the total number of sessions required will depend primarily on your sex, skin color, area of the body being treated, and the coarseness of your hair. Course dark colored hair on light skin is the easiest type to treat, while finer hair on dark colored skin will usually required more sessions over a longer period of time. Considerably more treatments may be required on the facial areas of both men and women in order to achieve the desired results.

It’s important to note that laser hair removal is not considered to be a “permanent” solution. Instead, it is considered to be a “long-term” solution. You should also know that the laser does not work on light or very fine (peachfuzz) hair. Also, since hair typically grows in several phases (anagen, telogen, catagen), the laser will only have effect on the actively growing follicles (anagen), and several sessions are required to kill hair through all the phases of growth.

The only permanent hair removal solution for all types of hair is electrolysis. However, it has several shortcomings. These include possible scarring, discomfort, and overall expense.

Product Review – TRIA Laser Hair Removal System

Product Review - Tria-Laser-Hair-Removal-SystemRepost from Amazon.com:

First, I have only been using the Tria for about 1 1/2 months. I bought this for my legs and other areas because I have very dark hair that grows at a lightning speed and I also get razor burn with more frequent shaving no matter how much I spend on quality razors and shaving gel. Anyways, I couldn’t afford to get my legs done in a center so after doing a lot of research I decided to invest in a Tria. According to the instructions, you aren’t supposed to see any results until at least the second month. To my surprise, I believe I am already seeing results. The hair seems to be growing in less dense and slower already. However it definitely is no where close to being hair-free yet. Tria instructions do state you wont see visible reduction until after 3 months and that you wont see permanent results until 8 months. So I am happy that after only 1 1/2 months I am noticing some improvement. So far, the pros are the amazingly low cost compared to going to a center (it would be thousands of dollars to get this done at a center) and it seems to be working so far. It is less painful to me than laser in an office. I immediately started using Tria on the highest setting on my legs. It is moderately painful for me, but for anyone who has done waxing, electrolysis, or laser already, it really isn’t that bad. The negative side is that it really is time consuming for large areas like the legs. If you overlap like you’re supposed to, it would take 3 charges to do 1 lower leg (sometimes I cheat and get 1 lower leg done in 2 charges). What happens is that after so many pulses the battery needs to be recharged. So because you have to treat the area every other week for the 1st three months, if you do a large area of your body, like the legs, expect to need to stick around home on those weekends and invest a lot of time into doing the Tria. It really takes the whole weekend plus say monday and tuesday after work to get my full legs and bikini done. However, its not like you’re spending this entire amount of time doing tria. It takes about 20-30 minutes for each treatment and then 3 hours in between treatments to charge the battery. The other pro is that it is REALLY easy to use. It is pretty much fool proof. So far I am impressed, but unfortunately won’t know 100% for sure until probably a few more months if the Tria really does provide permanent hair removal. However, because its been recommended by Good Housekeeping and countless other magazines, I am fairly confident that it will be worth it.

Laser Hair Removal Versus Electrolysis

February 1, 2010 by Admin
Filed under 3 - Compared With Electrolysis, Featured

hair-epilationAnother well known method for hair removal is Electrolysis. This is a method that has been used for over 130 years. If you have very fine or light-colored hair that you wish to have removed, then this is the best option for you since this is the only permanent hair removal option for that type of hair.

Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only allows the term “Permanent Hair Removal” to be associated with the electrolysis process. For Laser Hair Removal, the term used is “Permanent Hair Reduction”. Unlike laser epilation, electrolysis is known to be effective on all hair colors and types.

In the year 2000, a study was conducted in Ankara, Turkey to compare the laser hair removal process versus hair removal by electrolysis. This study included twelve patients. In conclusion, the laser hair removal method was found to be 60 times faster, less painful, and more reliable than the electrolysis method.
